A compromise morphing into betrayal?
The World Chess Championship for Children and Youth has finished in the Emirates. Israel was presented without mentioning the country, without the flag and other national symbols. Five Israelis were at this event under the banner of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The list of participating countries however featured the non-existent state of Palestine which had its own flag in the championship.
The tournament was held on the Swiss system with participants always playing with neighbours in the standings . In this case, all the strongest receive roughly the same alignment of meetings so that the system mirrors almost a real situation provided that all participants are on equal footing when determining pairs before the next round .
However a talented Israeli chess player, a champion of Europe among girls under 10 years old, Nastya Wooller from Ashdod, who had a real chance of winning, failed to reach the top. Nastya never got to meet any of Iranian girls although the two chess players from this country continued steadfastly in the tournament neighbourhood with Nastya Wooller. According to the Swiss system, such situation is generally unlikely.
It turns out that the tournament organizers have introduced the amendments to the system: none out of five Israeli children and adolescents fell to play with peers from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria , Qatar, Egypt, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait , Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan , Mauritania , Yemen , UAE and Palestine. That is, pairs of opponents in the championship were not determined by the formula of the Swiss system but the fraud which had a serious effect on athletic performance .
In Israel, it caused almost no media resonance. The only person who responded was Alex Tarn, a Russian-speaking author living in Israel and whose article we have used. But why did FIDE, for which Israel plays a big role, keep silent? In particular , a resident of Herzliya, FIDE Vice President Israel Gelfer . Or the chairman of the Association of Chess Professionals , Israeli Emil Sutovsky . Or the honorary Israeli chess player Mr. Natan Sharansky . Finally , the Israeli Chess Federation and its long-term president Aviv Bushinskii. Are all afraid that they will not be re-elected if they lose votes of Arab voters ?
And here ‘s a different story . Palestinian news agency MAAN reported the conditions under which the head of the PA administration , Abu Mazen will sign an agreement which is yet being developed by a team of the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
“No” to recognition of Israel as a Jewish state .
“No” to a “demilitarized” Palestinian state .”
“No” to IDF units anywhere in Judea and Samaria for 36 months from the date of signing the contract.
“No” to Israeli sovereignty over Jewish Quarter of the Old City in Jerusalem.
Once the American proposal is received, Abu Mazen will present it to the leadership of LAS to jointly decide whether to accept it or reject it .
But now we know that the only compromise that the PA may take into consideration is a minimal, limited exchange of territories. The proportion is one to one. In addition, Abu Mazen can agree to give Israel three years ( 36 months) for the complete withdrawal of its troops from Judea and Samaria. Abu Mazen is also against any temporary ( interim ) agreements.
In this effort , John Kerry has focused on proclamation of Palestinian statehood in a separate region – Judea and Samaria fully excluding any association with the Gaza strip. Since August 2005, there has already been existing a Palestinian state called “Hamastan”. Under the ruling of its leader Ismail Haniyeh, it is capable to drive into a refuge the whole Israeli region with over a million inhabitants. Haniyeh is not bound by contractual obligations with either Israel or with intermediaries such as the U.S. or the Arab League.
Israel withdrew completely from the Gaza strip in 2005 but this did not provide the Negev residents with safety and confidence in the future . On the contrary, the inspired jihadists threaten Jerusalem with shelling.
According to the former Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh , nowadays “Hezbollah ” in the south and Hamas in the north dispose of 70,000 rockets. It was Iran and Syria who supplied islamists with the missiles. Following the Geneva interim agreement on Iranian “peaceful” nuclear program with the light hand of Barack Obama, the Tehran ayatollahs squared their shoulders feeling support which previously did not dare to dream!
The U.S. president gave impetus to “Arab Spring” with his fiery speech in Cairo three years ago. Now he has rebuilt with his own hands the “axis of evil ” and a ” New Middle East” he created has become a completely new alignment of forces after the Geneva agreement with Iran.
West caved in to the state whose first political goal is destruction of Israel. Will Benjamin Netanyahu agree to a new retreat from the so-called “remote isolated ” settlements in Judea and Samaria which will be regarded as another demonstration of weakness by the Islamist fanatics?
After all, the White House has no pressure on Israel on the issue of borders ensuring Israel’s security.
Abu Mazen put forward preconditions (four “no’s” ) of the one side and showed residents of “Fatahlenda ” how cool and inflexible he is. Although the only thing he needs is the “occupation” lasting as long as possible. In this case, the administration of PA will continue to receive astronomical cash infusion pocketed by the corrupt elite.
As for the government of Netanyahu -Lieberman – Shamir -Landau- Bennett, they need a lot of patience to survive in the next 36 months.
Within three years (until the end of the last of Barack Hussein Obama’s term) Israel will have to use the tactics of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir: procrastinate .
